Customer Service Week October 3 - 7, 2011

Customer Service Week Activities

Activity:

Write Your Own Tradition Statement

Materials:

Pads

Pens

Notes:

This year’s Customer Service Week theme is A Tradition of ServiceTM. And it provides a wonderful opportunity to focus on and celebrate your organization's own traditions of service.

Many service operations have a mission or vision statements. These are forward-looking statements that guide every aspect of the service operation.

During Customer Service Week, you can also create a tradition statement, which looks back to identify the guiding principles and practices that have made your service organization strong.

Directions:

Divide your group into teams of five to six. These may be work teams, shifts, or other natural divisions. Each team will create their own tradition statement.

Ask the teams to consider your organization’s traditions in the following areas and to make a list of appropriate adjectives. Some examples follow:

Our approach to customers:
  • Courteous
  • Caring
  • Patient
Our approach to our work:
  • Diligent
  • Accurate
  • Efficient
Our approach to our coworkers:
  • Helpful
  • Generous
  • Cooperative

Next, blend these important adjectives into your own tradition statement. For example:

TherMax Corp. Tradition Statement

At TherMax Corp. our customer service traditions make our department and our company strong.

We share a tradition of providing courteous, caring and patient service to all customers.

We share a tradition of working with diligence, accuracy and efficiency.

We share a tradition of supporting our co-workers in a helpful, generous and cooperative way.

Discussion:

Take a few moments for one person from each team to read aloud their group’s tradition statement. After each statement is read discuss some of the differences and similarities. For example:
  • Now that you’ve heard all of the statements, is there something in another groups tradition statement that you’d like to include in your own? Tell us why?
  • Was it easy for your team to develop the statement or were there disagreements about our traditions?

Follow Up:

Select one statement for the department and prepare an attractive version for each rep to post at their desk.
